MH370 Passengers Likely Suffocated, Australia Says

The passengers and crew of missing Malaysia Airlines flight #MH370

Air Travel Strikes: What happens if my flights are cancelled?

#AirTravelStrikes: What happens if my #flights are #cancelled?
First we had strike threats at Aer Lingus. Now travellers are experiencing further headaches as a French air traffic controllers’ strike sparks delays across Europe. So what exactly are your rights if your flight is cancelled?
Air Travel Strikes What happens if my flights are cancelled
How do I know if my flights are affected?
Check your airline’s website (e.g. aerlingus.com). In the event of a strike or cancellation, it should quickly post the relevant flight disruption information, including a list of affected flights.
What are my rights if my flight is cancelled?
If your flight is cancelled for any reason, and regardless of when you are notified, your airline must offer you the choice between:
1) Re-routing as soon as possible, subject to availability, free of charge.
2) Re-routing at a later date.
3) A full refund.
How do I arrange a re-routing or refund?
In the event of a cancellation or delay, airlines are obliged to inform passengers of their options. If this happens at the airport, staff will usually be on hand to talk you through the various scenarios. Otherwise, the quickest option is to check your carrier’s website. It should include the steps to process your own refunds or bookings.

Is Delta ‘The World’s Most Trusted Airline’?

That descriptor is sure to elicit guffaws from the plenty of Delta-bashers who are still smarting from last year’s SkyMiles award-price increases, and from Delta’s upcoming conversion of SkyMiles to a revenue-based program.
According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Delta has filed a trademark application for the right to promote itself as The World’s Most Trusted Airline.
Is Delta ‘The World’s Most Trusted Airline’?
Is rustworthy an adjective that most or even plenty of travelers would be inclined to apply to Delta? I doubt it.
Delta is currently basking in the glow of smitten industry watchers impressed with the company’s strong financial and operational performance. But the most trusted designation is clearly meant to apply to Delta’s customers, not to a small group of financial analysts.
United’s re-adoption of the Fly the Friendly Skies slogan is a case in point. The issues that bedeviled United in the aftermath of its merger with Continental were rampant and well publicized. United’s skies were anything but friendly, and the tagline was bandied about by flyers sarcastically, to call attention to United’s cluelessness.
A sure amount of hyperbole is expected in airline promotion. But if the claim goes far, it risks exposing the company to ridicule.
American, on the other hand, was savvy to steer clear of its Something Special in the Air slogan at a time when it was clearly anything but something special in the air.
But the airline that bests all others when it comes to managing customers expectations is Southwest, which claims to be neither reliable nor friendly nor special. It delivers a modest service for a modest cost, without making any grand claims for itself. And Southwest’s customers are among the industry’s most satisfied, and the most loyal.
When you think The World’s Most Trusted Airline, does Delta come to mind?
Reader Reality Check
As Delta will discover, there’s a lot to be said for under promising and over delivering.

How to Get Compensation for a Delayed & Canceled Flight?

Are you eligible for compensation?
It depends. In general, you can get some kind of compensation if the airline is to blame, like in the event that they oversold the flight and you were bumped, or if there is a mechanical issue. But if the cancellation was due to weather or other circumstances beyond the airlines’ control, no compensation is necessary. Technically, that means that airlines don’t owe anything to passengers who were left stranded by the Polar Vortex.
jetblue-cancelation-credit-january-2014-1024x347
However, JetBlue is offering some consolation for the recent winter storm delays in the kind of TrueBlue points for members and JetBlue credit for non-members:
They also listen to that JetBlue may be compensating passengers for expenses related to the cancellations, such as hotel stays and meals. In the event you were among those JetBlue passengers affected, send a duplicate of your receipts to hercules@jetblue.com.
Other airlines might offer similar compensation for storm delays, but probably won’t offer it unless you ask directly. And the bottom line is that you SHOULD ask – in the event you paid for a hotel room or meals out of your own pocket.
What if your plane was stuck on the tarmac?
The US Department of Transportation’s page for airline consumers states that you cannot be kept on the plane for over three hours for a domestic flight, or four hours for international, without allowing passengers a chance to get off. There’s safety and security exceptions, however, so in the event you were stuck on a plane for longer than is usually allowed in the work of the storm, the airlines may cite safety concerns. Airlines fined for tarmac delays historicallyin the past have issued refunds, vouchers and frequent flyer miles for compensation, but it is the DOT that determines the amount of the fine for each individual incident, so there is no set amount or technique.
Finding a Flight with Another Airline
In the event you can finding a flight out with different airline, the DOT says that you ought to ask the first airline to “endorse” your new ticket to the new airline, which may prevent you from paying a fare increase above what you paid the first airline. Not all airlines do this, nor do all of them honor such endorsements, but the worst that can happen is that they say no.
Cancelling Your Trip Entirely
If your flight delay or cancellation leads you to cancel your whole trip, the airlines are necessary to refund any unused portion of your transportation. That includes non-refundable tickets and bag fees.
Other General Tips for Canceled Flights
At the very least, you’ll want to get to wherever you’re going as quickly as possible, and there are some steps you can take to maximize your chances for a speedy rebooking.
  • Get in line for the counter with everyone else, but also call the airline. Chances are that you’ll be on hold for a bit, but you’re already standing in line too, so you’ve got time. One will get you to a live person who can book you on another flight faster than the other, and it might be the thing that gets you on a new flight sooner rather than later. If the airline’s phones are completely jammed, try calling their international number instead, which probably isn’t getting hit so hard.
  • Rebook yourself online. Most airports are wired up with wi-fi these days, or you can launch your own hotspot with your phone if that’s part of your data plan. Print your new boarding passes at a self-serve kiosk and go.
  • Take your story to Twitter. If you’re hitting a lot of brick walls, start tweeting at the airline. You may be surprised by how quickly your issue is resolved. Consider including a local news outlet if the situation is turning into a major nightmare for everyone.
  • Be flexible. Many major cities have more than one major airport – Chicago has both O’Hare and Midway, for example. New Yorkers get their choice of JFK, LaGuardia or even Newark. Another alternative is to fly into a different city that’s reasonable close by. It’s not that far from Milwaukee to Chicago, and the airline may pick up the tab for the bus ticket you’ll need for that final leg.
  • Save your receipts. Hotels, food and other expenses you incur as a result of the delay might be reimbursed by the airline.
  • Understand the true reason for your cancellation – it matters. If your flight was canceled due to weather, then as we mentioned earlier, the airline technically owes you nothing. Bad weather is simply a risk that passengers know they’re taking on when they initially book a flight, and airlines don’t owe anything for circumstances beyond their control. But if your flight was canceled because the airline didn’t have enough eligible pilots available to push through the backlog, that may be the airline’s fault.

Narendra Modi wipes out 'ugly' past with Rahul Gandhi?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted his political adversary Rahul Gandhi warmly...
It was a spectacle of bonhomie in the Central Hall of Parliament as Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted his political adversary Rahul Gandhi warmly grabbing his hand, while Congress President Sonia Gandhi chatted intermittently with BJP veteran L K Advani.
Modi holds Rahul's hand amid bonhomie in Parliament
The occasion was the joint sitting of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, addressed by President Pranab Mukherjee, that saw political rivals from Left, Right and Centre exchanging pleasantries.
The exchange of greetings between Narendra Modi and the Congress Vice-President caught the attention of everybody. The Prime Minister was seen warmly grabbing Rahul Gandhi's hand.
Modi greeted the Congress Vice-President who was seated in the eighth row along with senior Congress leaders Motilal Vora and Jairam Ramesh.
As soon Modi, dressed in his usual half kurta and jacket, came close to Rahul, he held his hand bringing an instant smile on the Congress leader's face.
Soon leaders of various parties surrounded Rahul. This is perhaps the first occasion when Modi exchanged greetings with Rahul after a bitterly fought Lok Sabha election.
Modi, as the Prime Ministerial candidate of BJP, had frequently attacked Rahul mocking him as "shehzada" and targeting the Gandhi family during campaigning.
Before the President's address began, Sonia was seen engaged in prolonged chat with Advani sitting next to her in the packed Central Hall.
A number of MPs, including Chandan Mitra, Babul Supriyo, Rajyavarhan Rathore and Manoj Tewari, who could not find a seat, kept standing during the President's 55-minute address.
Sonia greeted with thumping of desk as the President outlined government's commitment of zero tolerance to violence against women and its promise to provide 33 per cent reservation for them in Parliament and state Assemblies.
Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Advani also welcomed it by thumping the desk.
Singh was seated with Modi and Jaitley in one of the first rows.
Sonia also greeted with thumping of desk when Mahatma Gandhi's name was mentioned in the speech. They also hailed the government's plan for cleaning the Ganga river.
The mention of government's commitment to clean the Ganga and ensure return of Kashmiri Pundits to the land of their ancestors drew maximum applause from members.
Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad was seen going to each row greeting MPs before the start of the Presidential speech.
Leaders of Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad sat next to each other in the same row.

Karachi airport attack Live: Tehreek-e-Taliban claims credit - #KarachiAirport

8.02 am: Tehreek-e-Taliban claim responsibility for Karachi airport
The Tehreek-e-Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack on the Karachi airport.
The militants claimed responsibility a few hours after the Pakistan army said that a six hour siege of the airport had ended.
Although it was not clear what reasons the Tehreek-e-Taliban had given for the attacks, they come even as government-led peace talks with the local Taliban faction and other militants have floundered in recent weeks.

7.38 am: Pak army says Karachi airport attackers carried 'Indian made' weapons
With the attack on the Karachi international airport finally ending, attention is now turning to who is responsible for the audacious 26/11 style attack. No one has claimed responsibility so far.
While some reports have implicated the Taliban, a news report by India Today quoted the Pakistan Rangers as saying that the weapons recovered from the militants are of Indian make.
There has however been no official claim made in this regard as yet.

6.30 am: Pakistan army declares military operation over
Pakistan's army spokesman declared an end to a military operation following a six-hour long siege of Pakistan's busiest airport in the southern city of Karachi Monday. "Update: Area cleared. No damage to aircraft, fire visible in pics was not plane but a building, now extinguished. All vital assets intact," tweeted Major General Asim Bajwa at 4:35 am (1135 GMT Sunday).
Bajwa added that a total of 10 militants were killed in clashes with security forces, and that ammunition, rockets and RPGs were recovered from the attackers, who wore "big packs". "Precautionary sweep after day light. Airport will be cleared by mid day for operations, handed back to CAA (Civil Aviation Authority)/ASF (Airport Security Force). Pakistan Zindabad (long live Pakistan)!" he later tweeted.
5.30 am: Militants disguised as airport security launch 26/11 style attack on Karachi airport
Gunmen disguised as police guards attacked a terminal at Pakistan's busiest airport Sunday night with machine guns and a rocket launcher, killing at least 13 people as explosions echoed into the night, officials said. A separate suicide bombing in the country's southwest killed 23 Shiite pilgrims returning from Iran, authorities said.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, nor the suicide bombing in Baluchistan province. However, the attacks come as government-led peace talks with the local Taliban faction and other militants have floundered in recent weeks.
Heavy gunfire and multiple explosions could be heard coming from the terminal, used for VIP flights and cargo. A major fire rose from the airport, illuminating the night sky in an orange glow as the silhouettes of jets could be seen. The deadly operation was carried out by 10 militants, said the Chief Minister of Sindh province, Qaim Ali Shah.

WordPress All in One SEO plugin hijacked, search ratings could be affected

A popular WordPress plugin, All in One SEO Pack, downloaded around 19 million times has received emergency patches to dangerous vulnerabilities that could have allowed hackers to inject malicious code into pages and lower the search ratings for the site.
All in One SEO Pack
The plugin, called All in One SEO Pack, is used to make it easy to optimize WordPress sites for search engines including automatic meta tag generation that search engines such as Google use to identify sites. It is one of many such services as search engine optimisation is something many people will pay lots of money for in order to improve their position on Google. Travis Jamison from Supremacy SEO, a leading search marketing agency said when the issue was discovered

“The All in One SEO plugin is one of the most downloaded SEO plugins in WordPress. I have been a big supporter of the plugin so far as it enables amateur webmasters to optimize their on-site content with relative ease. However, as of now, I recommend users delete the plugin and not re-download it until an updated version is released.”
All versions of the plugin older than 2.1.6 were affected. The flaws were originally disclosed by web developer and security analyst Marc-Alexandre Montpas in a blog post and warned that
“If your site has subscribers, authors and non-admin users logging in to wp-admin …if you have open registration, you are at risk.”
He added that another vulnerability in the plugin could allow a hacker to execute malicious JavaScript code onto a website’s WordPress control panel enabling parameters involved in the management of the website could be changed by an unauthorized user.
WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems (CMS) for hosting websites and blogs. It powers millions of sites worldwide and is famed for its ease of use and one-click installation process onto a server.

Know The Value of Unused Flight Tickets

Beginning the week of Aug 26th, 2002, most airlines have applied new rules for determining the worth of unused non-refundable tickets.

    • For most carriers, the face value of a unused non-refundable ticket can be applied towards the acquisition of a brand spanking new ticket on the same airline for up to year as long as the change is made on or before the departure time of the first ticketed flight.
    • Unused partial non-refundable tickets have no value for future purchases or exchange one time the flight dates have past.
    • To help you choose the cost to cancel your airline ticket, you can use our new cancellation calculator. The calculator will display the amount of refund you would get in the event you cancel the trip or the amount of credit you can use towards future travel if your ticket was issued on a non-refundable fare...........
    • Display the trip you need to review by entering the Trip ID & e-mail address, used when your reservation was made, on the Trip Lookup page.
    • Click Retrieve Booking
    • On the Trip Details page scroll down to the Change or Cancellation Owner section
    • Click on the “Online Calculator” link
    • The calculator will display the amount of refund you would get in the event you cancel the trip or the amount of credit you can use towards future travel if your ticket was issued on a non-refundable fare.
      • If your ticket can be used as a credit:
        1. Keep your (paper) ticket. (In the event you lose your paper ticket the airline will charge you a lost ticket fee of up to $100 in addition to the $130 penalty fee and any additional fare.)
        2. In the event you have an e-ticket, keep a record of your Trip ID or the ticket number until you are prepared to book your next trip (most ticket credit value is only lovely for one year from the original date of issue). You will find your ticket number on your credit card statement.
